About me

Machaela Dunlea

I have lived and worked in Harlow for the past 25 years. I have had several years’ experience working with charities supporting people living with mental health issues including depression, schizophrenia, OCD and bipolar disorder. I was a telephone support worker for The Association for Post Natal Illness (Supporting women with post natal depression) for over ten years. For a number of years I worked as a counsellor for a GP‘s surgery in Hertfordshire. I currently run a private counselling practice in Harlow and I work as a volunteer running a charity which promotes theatre for young people in Harlow.

I hold a Diploma in Integrative Psychosynthesis Counselling, having trained at ReVision based in North London. This means I use various ideas and methods taken from Humanistic, Gestalt, Jungian and Psycho-dynamic approaches working under the umbrella of Psychosynthesis, which is a transpersonal psychology. It simply means I would work very individually with you and take into consideration all aspects of you and your life. We would work together to find what approach is best for you.

My training was accredited by, and I am a member of, the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists, BACP, and I adhere to their professional and ethical framework. I hold full public liability insurance.

What can counselling help with?

Counselling can support you in many life situations and events, including difficult transitions, for example divorce, bereavement, redundancy and midlife.

Counselling can help you come to terms with past events such as surviving trauma, neglect, abuse, and bullying.

Counselling can offer relief for many kinds of emotional difficulties like a lack of confidence or low self-esteem, anger, stress, panic, anxiety and short-term or long-term depression.

Counselling offers a place to look at all kinds of personal issues including sexuality, issues of identity, the effects of physical illness, feeling stuck in life/job/relationship, loneliness and grief; a place to express difficult feelings.

Perhaps you don’t even feel particularly distressed but something is disturbing you and you can’t quite put your finger on it. You just know that something is not right or something is missing. Counselling can simply provide a breathing space for you when you’re lost on your life path.

Many people find it difficult to speak out when they are in pain. They fear burdening other people, especially loved ones and friends. A counsellor is trained to provide that listening ear without being hurt or ‘burdened’ by what is said.

I can offer a steady, calm presence in an atmosphere where you can express yourself. I will offer this with compassion and empathy and a willingness to stay with you in your pain.
